Marmolada Mountain, Italy

Marmolada is a mountain in northeastern Italy and the highest mountain of the Dolomite (a section of the Alps). The mountain is located about 100 kilometers north-northeast of Venice, from which it can be seen on a clear day. It consists of a ridge running west to east. Towards the south it breaks suddenly into sheer cliffs, forming a rock face several kilometers long. On the north side there is a comparatively flat glacier, the only large glacier in the Dolomite. During the ski season the Marmolada's main ski run is opened for skiers and snowboarders alike, making it possible to ski down into the valley. Paul Grohmann made the first ascent in 1864, along the north route.
